Follow the steps below for successful academic planning of your study abroad:
1. Review your degree progress.
Many colleges and departments have planning tools to create a degree plan and calendar. What courses do you still have to complete for your major, minor, and breadth/general education requirements? When are these courses usually offered? How many terms do you have left to complete your degree?
2. Determine your college and department policies for study abroad.
Each college and department has different requirements regarding study abroad. Do your college and department recommend that you have completed certain courses or requirements prior to studying abroad? What major, minor, and breadth/general education requirements will your college and department allow you to satisfy with study abroad coursework? How many courses and units from study abroad are allowed toward these requirements? How many semester units must a study abroad course be worth in order to satisfy a requirement?
3. Compile a study abroad course list.
Using academic information from your study abroad program, identify courses that you plan to take while abroad and create a course list to guide your planning process. Which courses are available to you as a study abroad student? Are there any restrictions or prerequisites? Are courses taught in English or in another language? What term(s) are courses usually offered on the program? How many courses and units are you required to enroll in? Are there alternative courses you can identify in case your initial courses are not available?
4. Review your course list with your college and department.
Consult with your college to determine if your study abroad coursework may satisfy breadth/general education requirements and with your department to review major and/or minor requirements. Even if you are not planning to complete degree requirements while abroad, it is still recommended that you meet with your college and department. What steps are required by your college and department to request degree credit? What material do your college and department need to evaluate your courses (e.g. syllabi, course descriptions) prior to departure and upon your return? How will you communicate any changes to your course list to your college and department, especially once you are abroad?
